Self-worth can be elusive.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of self-worth, as people’s self-worth will vary depending on their age, gender, occupation, and other personal factors. However, some general tips can help you boost your self-worth.
1: Value Your Word Are you more likely to keep your word to others than yourself?
Some of the biggest indicators of self-worth are how we treat ourselves. If we constantly put ourselves down or neglect our own needs in favor of those of others, it can harm our sense of worth. People who maintain a high level of integrity with themselves tend to have a much higher opinion of themselves than those who do not. This is because integrity is about upholding our values and beliefs despite what others may say or think. It’s about standing up for what we believe, even when it’s difficult or unpopular. When we take care of ourselves mentally and emotionally, we build truly unshakeable self-worth.
I like to keep my word - so I underpromise. And every time I keep or exceed my word, I am in integrity.
2: Value Your Time How much do you value your time?
Self-worth is a key component to guarding one’s time. People who have a strong sense of self-worth tend to value their time more than those who do not. This is because they are more likely to be motivated to spend their time on activities that are important to them, rather than doing something for the sake of it. Those with low self-worth often feel like they don’t have enough worth and so may expend less effort in guarding their time. In addition, people with low self-worth often place less value on themselves and so may not care as much about how their time is spent.
I have upset a lot of people over the years because they just want me to say I would spend time with them - whether I will or not. I would rather be honest and say no upfront.
3: Value Your Efforts Do you use minimizing language when speaking about yourself? e.g. That was just a small program I wrote…
Do you dismiss compliments? e.g. “Oh you are just being kind..”
Many people view themselves in a negative light, often speaking minimally about themselves and minimizing compliments. This can be detrimental to their self-worth and can create feelings of self-doubt. If you find yourself minimizing compliments or statements about your accomplishments, it may be helpful to consider how you are viewing yourself. If you find that your self-worth is based on external factors such as looks, wealth, or status, it may be important to work on rebuilding your esteem by focusing on things that make you feel good about yourself.
4: Celebrate Your Achievements Do you finish a task just to jump into the next?
Do you take time to celebrate your wins?
Celebrating your wins is an important part of self-worth. When you feel good about yourself, you’re more likely to be successful in everything you do. Taking the time to celebrate your successes can help you build a positive self-image and boost your confidence. When you feel good about yourself, it’s easier to find satisfaction in life’s small victories and maintain a positive attitude towards difficult challenges.
One of my tricks to help achieve this is to create a “Ta-Da” list in addition to my TODO list. So, at the end of each day, I list the things I completed (Ta-Da!) and take the time to celebrate that.
5: Value Others One of the most important things we can do to improve our well-being is to value others as well. Doing so helps us develop a strong sense of self-worth, which in turn allows us to feel confident and happy in our relationships. When we see others as valuable, not just as members of our team or customers, but as individuals with their worth, it can help build trust and encourage cooperation. It’s also easier to be accepting and forgiving when we feel good about ourselves.
